XXVI
TOO MUCH is happening in this spring. Too many aspirations, too many boundless claims, too many brimming and unrestrained ambitions distend its dark depths. Its expansion knows no bounds. The administration of this enormous, branching and overgrown venture is beyond my strength, and so I have appointed Rudolf co-regent — anonymously, of course — with the intention of placing part of the burden on him. We two, along with his stamp album, constitute the unofficial triumvirate on whose shoulders the burden of responsibility rests for this whole inscrutable and inconceivable affair.
